Volvo has a long-standing reputation for building some of the safest vehicles on the road. The 2023 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards have cemented that as they named the Volvo XC90 and XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid 2023 IIHS TOP SAFTEY PICK+ award winners.

This is even more impressive considering the IIHS has raised their already high standards for safety. The new, more exacting criteria demand better side crash protection, improved pedestrian crash prevention systems, and the elimination of subpar headlights from the field of qualifying vehicles. Both the Volvo XC90 and XC90 Recharge met or exceeded these new benchmarks.

The IIHS has dramatically increased the difficulty of their original side crash test. The updated test involves 82 percent more energy and requires vehicles to earn an acceptable or good rating to qualify for TSP, while a good rating is required for the TSP+. The mild hybrid (XC90) and plug-in hybrid (XC90 Recharge) versions of the XC90 earned a TSP+ award.

“The Volvo XC90 continues to prove, year after year, that it is among the safest vehicles on the road today,” said Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

In addition, the National Traffic Highway Safety Institute (NHTSA) has five star safety ratings in virtually every category for most new 2023 Volvo models from the S60 sedan to the XC60 SUV to the V60 wagon.

Volvo’s commitment to pioneering safe and intelligent technology solutions that protect drivers, passengers, friends and family continues with the revolutionary EX90 coming in 2024.
